Maastricht-Hasselt Railway

In 1857 finally a station was finished at the townside (left bank) of the Maas, just outside the towns fortificationwalls, located at the Bosscherveld: Boschpoort Station. It was built along the sluice, between the drawbridge and the waterinlet. However the line had to breach the earth walls of the city north of the Bosch-Gate. In 1861 there was only an average of 28 travelers per day who would use the the station and due to a decision of the tax-inspector the station was "temporarily" discontinued, but this turned out to be forgood. At what date the station-house was torn down, I was not able to detect yet. Follow us on our walk across a part of the line as we found it in 2006.

At this point we found the turnout of the branch to the former railway yard of the Sphinx-pottery-factory at the Statensingel. (The founderfamily Regout was one of the stockholders of the Railroad)

At this viaduct the line crosses the Fort Willemweg.

The passthrough track to Lanaken is enclosed by a few remaining tracks of the yard in the bridgehead. At the right the bridgehead is emptied.

Boschpoort Station was situated across this viaduct on the left side.

The track Maastricht-Hasselt was discontinued for passenger-trains in 1954 .
Since 1992 the railroad is in decay. Its not clear when the station was torn down. A few remains are still there, as one can see better in wintertime !

Shortly before Smeermaas the line crosses the Brusselseweg by means of a bricked viaduct. The concrete bycicle gates at both sides date from 1975. (Aug 13, 2007)
