The connection Aachen to Gemmenich already existed since 1872. She was an
initiative of the
Bergisch-Märkische-Eisenbahngesellschaft (BME), that hoped with this to
compete with the Rhine-Railway that had the first connection with the
Belgian railway net. Now the Templerbend-station had a single-track
connection with Plombières. Originally it was a freight-line, but from 1886
there also was passenger-traffic.
The WW I
changed the importance of the line. The German occupier decided in 1915 to
use the railroad as a strategic line and in Feb.1917
the double-track connection with Montzen Station was a fact. The most
impressive tour de force was the realisation of the 1.107 meter long Geulvalley-viaduct.
Now in 2008 the section between reinartzkehl and Montzen gets overhead
wiring.
Between 2002
and 2004 this viaduct was completely renovated with an impressive planning
and technique.
