The Line Groningen - Nieuwe
Schans was first used in 1868. In 1876 the bridge over the river Eems
was finished and the line was enhanced to Irrhove in Germany. From the
year 2000 a joint-venture of the Dutch Railways and Arriva, named NoordNed,
acquired the concession from the NS. Starting 2002 the connection from Nieuwe Schans
to Germany was reinstalled, with help from the german company
LNVG. The
cooparation between the NS and Arriva regularly led to tensions. From
this year on Arriva obtained the shares from the NS and at the end of
this year 43 new railcars, ordered by
Arriva from Stadler in Switzerland,
will ride on the line under the name "Arriva", and eight
trainsets will be equipped to cross the border !
